• The door hangs crooked when it moves. This almost always means one cable has stretched or slipped a groove on the drum. The door still goes up and down, but it’s putting side load on the track and rollers every cycle.
• You can see frayed or unraveling cable near the bottom bracket. A cable does not fray without a reason. Usually the drum has a burr on the edge or the cable rubbed against a bent track, and the strands are telling you where the problem lives.
• The door jerks or shudders halfway through the cycle. When the cable winds unevenly on the drum, it builds slack and then snaps taut. That surge is hard on the opener and will eventually pull the drum off its shaft.
• One cable is slack while the other is tight. On a balanced door, both cables should carry equal tension at every point in the travel. A slack cable means the drum slipped, the cable stretched, or the spring lost tension on that side.
